Unravelling The Thai Language:

The Thai language has myriad roots, each of which can be traced back to a geographical or economic root. Thai, formerly known as Siamese, is part of the Kra-Dai family of languages, which includes a number of Southeast Asian and Northeast Indian languages too. 

Because of its unique geographical position, sharing borders with multiple countries, you can see linguistic styles from Vietnamese, Chinese and Khmer languages in modern-day Thai dialects. Interestingly, Thai script draws from the Pallava script which originates in 4th century South India, which is why it has similarities to Sanskrit as well.

If you’re relocating to Thailand and are looking to learn the local language (yes, we recommend it!) then here are some tips to get you started:

• Start with the basics: Begin with greetings and essential phrases like ‘kob khun’ (thank you) and ‘mai pen rai’ (no problem) and numbers like ‘neung, seung, sam’ etc. These phrases will create a foundation for your linguistic quest.
• Practice makes perfect: Immerse yourself in the language by engaging with locals at markets, restaurants, and shops. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; Thais appreciate the effort and will happily help you improve. Practicing one new sentence a day with a native will go a long way in becoming a fluent speaker.
• Join a conversation class: Connect with other expats and locals in language exchange groups or take a group class. Phuket has numerous language classes available, making it an opportunity to meet new people and make some friends too! Fun Fact: Thai is a tonal language, and is the one of the only languages that uses tonal markers in the script in the Kra-Dai family! Thai has over 70 dialects, although there are only about 5 primary dialects which are commonly spoken!
